SQL Server Reporting Services - a few notes
Posted: 07 Dec 07 7:43 AM
From initial investigations I can report good compatability with SSRS and Splendid.

Would add for people wanting to use SSRS the install is a bit of a pain... If you are running SQL Server Express you will need to upgrade to "SQL Server Express with Advanced Services", you will also need "SQL Server Express Advanced Toolkit"

First off - backup your splendid database!

Completely uninstall SSE and any other stuff you may have like SSMS...

Now install SSEWAS - but make sure you use the advanced option and make sure the "Workstation Components" is NOT included.

Now install the Advanced Toolkit.

Reboot the server

You should now have SSE with Reporting Services. If you look in the SQL folder you should have the "Business Intelligence Development Studio" (BIDS) and a Reporting Services Configuration Tool. BIDS allows you to write reports in Visual Studio which is pretty neat really.

Restore the Splendid DB and hook it up again

This all may sound a bit obvious but believe me I wasted a whole afternoon messing around with SSE, installing, uninstalling, re-installing, scratching head, getting angry, calming down, getting even angrier and eventually getting it to work... So hopefully this post will help somebody else trying to do the same.

Nice write-up. I have a couple questions as we are looking at the best way to use reporting services with a 1.4 install that I'm hoping you have already come up with an answer to:

1. Are you using reporting services with a pre-2.0 install? If so, how are you making the reports themselves available to the end-users within Splendid?
2. I assume the RDL import tool that was introduced in 2.0 is - or could be - now just your means by which to make the reports available to users within the application?
3. Is there anyone that is using a pre-2.0 install been able to retrofit the 2.0 and beyond reporting module - with the RDL import function - into a pre-2.0 install? If so, can anyone share the steps they took to do so?

Thanks in advance for any insights anyone can offer.
