Sorry about the lack of documentation. We have had way too much on our plate to slow down and write anything useful. Hopefully that will change when we get the new workflow engine out the door.
In the mean time, the code should be easy to follow and our support staff is available via forum, email and phone.
As for putting an AJAX UpdatePanel around an area, it is really easy to do and there are plenty of samples within the SplendidCRM code base.
