Choosing Source Control Software
Posted: 25 Jan 08 6:18 AM

We are currently deciding which source control product to implement and wonder if there are any benefits in choosing SGV over the alternatives...

The options are:

  • Source Gear Vault - Mainly because Splendid uses it and is relatively inexpensive
  • Subversion/Tortoise - Free as it's Open Source I have used this before and it rocks especially when combined with nAnt and cruise control, does require python and perl on your server though ( and some knowledge to get it all working )
  • VSS - De-facto standard which can now be accessed remotely ( which it never used to be )
  • Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere - Hosted On-demand model integrates directly with VS, I think MS have just bought Dynamsoft actually
  • Microsoft Team Foundation - Very expensive* but does have many advantages such as tight sharepoint integration and remote deployment options. I have deployed this before and it is a beast to not only install in the first pace but also to administer. You can however associate work items directly with code check-ins and it does integrate very well with VS ( as you would expect ) I think you get it for free if you are in the Microsoft Partner Programme. (* Works best with two servers)

I would be interested in the general opinion - especially SGV...

We used VSS for 12 years, when the company was called One Tree Software, before switching to Vault.  We are pleased with our decision and would absolutely encourage you to adopt vault as well.

Microsoft Team Foundation is way too big and bloated.  It is so painful to use that we don't use it often even though it is required to post to CodePlex.
