Most of the panels on the home page have some sort of status requirement. I don't know what they are off the top of my head.

Planned and Closed have special meanings. It would probably be best to use those for what they were originally intended.
Your best bet is to use the SugarCRM documentation to understand the implied meanings of the activity status values.
